I’m a big fan of snack and protein bars. They are awesome in a pinch and perfect for getting in nutrients while traveling. So I thought I’d review a handful of bars– some new, some stapled favorites and give you the lowdown.
brüks bars
Flavor: Cherry Espresso
Macros:
Protein – 3 g
Carbs – 32 g
Fat –10 g
Fiber – 4 g
Sugar – 22 g
Total Calories: 220
Okay so this isn’t technically a protein bar but I had to include this one to give some local love, and because it’s pretty damn tasty. If you are allergy prone, this bar is vegan and gluten, dairy, soy free. Great if you need a boost of energy and a quick snack on the go.
Fit Crunch
Flavor: Peanut Butter
Macros:
- Protein – 16 g
- Carbs – 14 g
- Fat – 8 g
- Fiber – 1 g
- Sugar – 3 g
Total Calories: 190
This is hands down the best tasting bar I’ve ever had and their best flavor. Considering the chef Robert Irvine is behind it, it’s not surprising. It comes in 2 sizes. The larger size is definitely more filling and obviously higher calorie, but the smaller size is perfect for snacking without blowing out too many of your fat/carb macros. The bigger size is almost like a meal replacement. Regardless, this bar is ridiculous and should be savored.
Combat Crunch
Flavor: Chocolate Coconut
Macros:
- Protein – 20 g
- Carbs – 25 g
- Fat – 10 g
- Fiber – 12 g
- Sugar – 5 g
Total Calories: 210
Another one of my favorite protein bars, the Combat Crunch. I tried the Chocolate Coconut for the first time, and really enjoyed it. Sort of like a chewier almond joy. My favorite is the Chocolate Cake, but the Peanut Butter Chocolate is also decent. This bar is probably the most macro friendly of the protein bars I’ve tried thus far, and packs a solid amount of fiber.
Fit Joy
Flavor: Mint Chocolate Crisp
Macros:
- Protein – 20 g
- Carbs – 25 g
- Fat – 7 g
- Fiber – 13 g
- Sugar – 4 g
Total Calories: 220
So this bar is just sort of meh for me. It’s not bad, but it’s also not great to me. I definitely like the Mint Chocolate Crisp better than the Peanut Butter Chocolate (I always try the PB chocolate because I consider it to be a baseline, but not the case here.) It’s a pretty macro friendly bar, so I don’t hate it, but to me the taste was just okay.
Power Crunch
Flavor: Peanut Butter Fudge
Macros:
- Protein – 13 g
- Carbs – 10 g
- Fat – 12 g
- Fiber – 1 g
- Sugar – 5 g
Total Calories: 200
When I first found Power Crunch bars I thought I was going to lose my mind. EVERY flavor is delicious and I love the original crispy wafer version. I love, love these protein bars. The frustrating part is that they are super low in fiber and pretty high in fat for a bar. I reserve these more as a special treat rather than using them to get in my nutrients.
ProBar Base
Flavor: Peanut Butter Chocolate
Macros:
- Protein – 20 g
- Carbs – 32 g
- Fat – 10 g
- Fiber – 4 g
- Sugar – 15 g
Total Calories: 290
These protein bars are pretty good, just the lack of fiber is infuriating to me. Eating 32g of carbs in a bar only to garner 4g of fiber is a waste. I really wish this wasn’t the case because not only is it yummy, but it’s a pretty good sized bar too.
Quest Bar
Flavor: Chocolate Brownie
Macros:
- Protein – 20 g
- Carbs – 22 g
- Fat – 7 g
- Fiber – 15 g
- Sugar – <1 g
Total Calories: 170
I want to love Quest bars, I really do. But I pretty much despise them. I find them to be chalky, grainy and just not delicious. I seriously question the judgement of people who say they love them. It’s a damn shame because the macros on this bar are great. I definitely eat them when I am in a serious pinch, like traveling and it’s the only bar macro-worthy but I do not choose it for the taste.
Snickers Protein
Flavor: Snickers
Macros:
- Protein – 18.2 g
- Carbs – 18.4 g
- Fat – 7.1 g
- Fiber – not listed
- Sugar – 9.5 g
Total Calories: 200
Another bar I wanted to love but sadly didn’t. I ordered these from some supplement store in the UK in hopes that they would be awesome. Really they just weren’t that Snickers-y. More like a protein bar trying really hard to be a Snickers. They also aren’t very large so over ally I had high hopes for this one and it came up way short.
